Where High School Football Is King, The Stadium's Screen Is Now King-Sized

September 4, 2012 by Dave Kissel, President & CEO, InStadium

Texas has long been known as the country's hotbed for high school football passion; it's where "Friday Night Lights" are a way of life and some people drive hundreds of miles to see the games.  Heck, Texas' small towns and small schools love football so much they field 6-man teams, which is its own exciting type of football (a former agency colleague of mine and native Texan, Jim Ferguson, is the driving force behind Hico, Texas' "Super Six Man" tournament, which draws talent from across the state. www.hicosupersix.com).  So it's no surprise that in the state where everything is big, a Texas high school has the country's biggest football stadium video screen.

An article in the 8/31/12 issue of the Wall Street Journal details Carthage, Texas' brand new 1,200 square-foot video scoreboard.  The Carthage Bulldogs are no strangers to stadiums with monster screens; they won a recent state championship at the Dallas Cowboys' stadium, generally recognized as the largest stadium video screen on the planet.  How do Carthage's fans feel about the new screen?  One said that the screen "is the icing on the cake" when it comes to watching her "Dawgs."  And how about the $60MM new stadium in Allen, Texas, as reported in the USA Today?  The big new video screen there is a part of an entire football complex with a sunken-bowl that can seat up to 18,000.

Now, it's too early to tell if this is an aberration or the beginning of a new trend, but if fans like them, and schools can afford them, we are likely to see more big screens in high school stadiums.  And in a state where bigger is always better, it may be just a matter of time before Beaumont, Texas, the previous big-screen high school record holder, upgrades to a screen that trumps the one in Carthage.  Meanwhile, here at InStadium, we'll be more than happy to include them both as a part of our growing big-screen media network.
